The Viva la Voce concerts on the weekend of 9 and 10 September at the Uniting Church in Port Macquarie celebrated the wonderful instrument that is the human voice. As well as the fabulous Cantorus choir and well known local baritone, Jim Matsinos, there were appearances from some of our most promising young singers. 

Jim Matsinos has been a feature of the musical scene here for over twenty years, collaborating with Musical Director, Robyn Ryan, on many memorable musical productions and concerts. The September concert Viva la Voce focussed on Jim Matsinos’ popular solo works as well as choral favorites performed by Cantorus.

Three young singers were invited to be part of the concert. As the audience discovered, they are remarkably talented and have very bright futures. Jamie Lee McDonald, a year 11 Student from St Columba Anglican school is trained by James Hannah and recently got a high distinction in her Grade 7 exam. She has a remarkably mature voice and performed 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' from Phantom of the Opera and 'Sometimes When We Touch'.

The youngest performer was Sarah Topfer, from Tacking Point Primary and also one of Mrs Ryan’s vocal and piano students. Her confidence and talent is remarkable for her age. She was selected for the prestigious Junior Gondwana Voices choir in January this year from applicants all over Australia. She has been singing in choirs since she was four and is currently a member of Bel Canto choir at Tacking Point Primary.

The Cantorus choir is a 50 voice SATB ensemble which has developed an enviable reputation throughout the state under the leadership of Robyn Ryan. The program through the year varies from major classical works to world music and modern experimental pieces. The September concerts traditionally feature the laid back favourites and always attract an enthusiastic audience.
